The first concerns the competition between people for a single role. Who should play Hamlet, who should sing the Queen of the Night? A different question is which role a particular artist should assume within a work. After all, not every performer is limited to just one role in a piece: the singer of Donna Anna could also sing Zerlina. Such questions arise in every field. Where Joshua Kimmich should be placed—right-back or holding six—has kept football fans in suspense for a long time... ...Last Friday we saw Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto at the splendid Frankfurt Opera, where it has been running for a year and a half. At the original premiere, the blood-soaked Egyptian den of intrigue featured the title hero sung by countertenor Lawrence Zazzo. But now Zazzo had taken on the role of his adversary, Tolomeo. That is a bit like Faust changing to Mephisto. Unlike Caesar (brilliantly sung by Yuriy Mynenko), Tolomeo the King of Egypt is not a desperately lovestruck hero, but rather pure villainy: he has Caesar’s rival Pompey executed in violation of every agreement in order to ingratiate himself with the victor, and then repulsively forces himself on the widow of his victim. Zazzo sings and plays Tolomeo magnificently, in the style of Peter Ustinov—whining, sadistic, amused, deceitful, and tyrannical all at once—truly a scene-stealer. He makes us forget his Caesar. The fact that, as King of Egypt, he does not have to sing quite so much coloratura frees his dramatic energy. Handel’s opera lasts four hours including intervals, so the audience is not only delighted by the singers but also grateful for the devil Tolomeo who accents the playfulness in the play: the evil that goes over the top, that breaks out of the order of the arias. Even during the final applause Zazzo looks on in amusement from the edge of the stage. The Tyne Theatre in Newcastle is the only remaining theatre in the UK with still-functioning Victoria era stage machinery, and Seaton Delaval Hall proved a magnificent setting, especially as it, like Acis, is celebrating its 300th birthday this year, and was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh, who also designed Handel's own Queen's (later King's) Theatre in London. It was thrilling (and ever so exhausting!) to rehearse, fully-stage and conduct a performance of Handel's masterpiece (in a later bilingual version) with second and third year Music undergraduates, as part of a module I teach there, called Performing Baroque Opera. Costumes, designed by Grace Bentley of Birmingham City's School of Fashion, were historically-informed. The set, designed by Dr. Irene Brown from Newcastle's Fine Arts faculty, was modern but used filmed projections from Northumbrian 'pastoral' locales. Our pit musicians included two novice harpsichordists learning to realise recitative, and a classical guitarist adapting archlute strumming and accompanying styles. Many of the singers had little or no experience with Baroque music or being onstage, and one of the highlights was a performance of 'Un sospiretto' (taken from Il pastor fido) played and sung by performers from our Folk degree, in folk style, with mandolin accompaniment-the connections between Handel and Neapolitan folk song were never so evident! Zazzo is not only outstanding as a performer, because he is always very close to the text and taps into all possible emotional expressions. Irony and cynicism also come to light in an interpretation that is often caricatured. There is no lack of tenderness, and so Zazzo always succeeds in making the stories told in the program touching. You can’t sing more theatrically than that! Now, one would not do justice to Zazzo’s art if one did not also talk about his technique. Because it is outstanding. He has perfect control of his voice and is thus able to apply all the nuances that his interpretation requires.
